Here’s a cool behind-the-scenes look at how Jimmy Fallon and his writing staff use Twitter hashtags to engage audiences and stir up laughs. (If you’re not sure what a hashtag is, here’s a quick explanation with examples.)
The “Late Night Hashtags” segment solicits tweets from viewers by creating hashtags (a few used so far: #worstlieevertold, #keepyourpantson, and #myfamilyisweird). The funniest and most outrageous tweets that use the designated hashtag are collected by Fallon’s staff to be read on air. As one of the writers says, viewers can become part of the show literally overnight.
